MARCH ON,
KID!
OUR STORY

Melanie Latson’s journey as an Educator began in the rich city of Richmond, California. Although rich in culture, love, and community, this city’s lack of resources is, indeed, what ignited her fire to make a difference both in and outside the classroom.
March on, Kid! was birthed from an annual event that she created as a first year Teacher in 2016. While teaching her students about the historic March on Washington, she had a deep hunger to not only teach her students about history, but show them how they themselves can become the history makers of today.
During the heavy climate of that time, it was important to give her students power in a moment where they felt powerless. For the first time in their lifetime, many of her students were seeing the true ills of racism and white supremacy in our world.
There were many times. when her students would address their fears about police brutality, unfair immigration laws, and even their impression of what the current president at the time would mean for the future of black and brown people.
From this, she knew she had to do something...
March on, Kid! was that something. Our organization was fueled by the necessity to give our youth a platform where their voices could be heard.
Through March on Kid, students are able to connect each issue like a new piece to a colorful puzzle that illustrates the complexity of what social justice truly is. With each march, a flame is sparked for each student to carry on the lifetime commitment of exercising advocacy, inclusion, and an urgency to disrupt inequitable systems by simply using their voices to speak out.
